Majestic Moments
Reflection
Work. Dinner. Cleaning. Children’s activities. Laundry. Bills. The daily rhythms can often cause patterns of moving through the day with our heads down, hyper-focused on our to-do lists, fully engaged in the tasks at hand, and accomplishing what is necessary. We drive to work, arriving without recalling the stop signs, traffic lights, or turns in the road. The laundry is collected, washed, dried, and folded with the mind numbed or distracted by the television. But every once in a while, something noteworthy captures the senses - the smell of cinnamon in a cup of tea, the sweet sound of a tight harmony sung, the taste of a slice of warm sourdough bread, a snowflake on our face, or a sight of a rainbow across the sky. In these moments, the beauty in front of us shakes us out of the mundane into a majestic moment.
Application
Scripture is filled with evidence of the majesty of God in the miracles - splitting the Red Sea for the Israelites to pass, healings of Jesus, and life from death. We also read of His majestic presence in the burning bush, the pillar of fire by day and cloud by night, and a fourth person in the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. But one of my favorite passages in Psalm 8 reminds us to take note and worship the God of creation. Hear this anthem to His majesty now:
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Closing/conclusion
The next time you see a sunrise on your drive to work, or notice the unique color of your baby’s eyes, or hear a bird chirp, take note that you have encountered a majestic moment, a gift from the Lord. Lift your eyes and awaken your senses! The Lord has provided everything out of the treasures of His goodness. May we marvel that He is mindful of us in the midst of His creation. May we turn our praises back to Him in the midst of the mundane as we acknowledge the majestic moments He has provided for us.
